When you hear the words boudoir photography, there’s a good chance a certain image comes to mind: lingerie, a bed, maybe some strategically placed sheets and a come-hither look. And yes, we can absolutely do all of those things. But boudoir can be so much more than that.
At Lone Star Pin-up, we’ve never believed there was one right way to be sexy. Boudoir can be soft and romantic, playful and teasing, dark and dramatic, glamorous and sophisticated, or fabulously over the top. It can borrow heavily from vintage pin-up or Old Hollywood, lean into fashion and fantasy, or simply celebrate you looking incredible in a sweater. You don’t even have to take your clothes off! To us, boudoir isn’t defined by how much skin you’re showing. It’s about the feeling we’re creating in the photograph.
So, What Exactly Is Boudoir?
Technically, boudoir comes from the French word for a woman’s private dressing room or bedroom, which explains why the photography genre became associated with intimate portraits. But somewhere along the way, boudoir developed a bit of a uniform: lingerie, bedroom, bed, sexy poses. There’s certainly nothing wrong with that formula, and sometimes it’s exactly what someone wants. But when a client tells us she wants to do boudoir, our next question isn’t simply, “What lingerie are you bringing?”
It’s more like, “What kind of sexy are we talking about?” Because that answer can take us in a hundred different directions. Maybe you want delicate lingerie, stockings, and garters with a distinctly vintage feel. Maybe you’re picturing tousled hair and white sheets. Maybe you want a glamorous Old Hollywood starlet slipping out of her evening gown. Maybe you want something dark, dramatic, and a little dangerous. You might want Bettie Page. You might want Halloween. You might want a cozy sweater and absolutely nothing underneath it. All of those can be boudoir!
Vintage…or Not
Booking boudoir at a vintage portrait studio does not mean you have to arrive ready to reenact 1947, although we certainly wouldn’t object.
You can absolutely build your entire session around a particular era or vintage icon. A Bettie Page-inspired boudoir session can be cheeky, mischievous, and even venture into some of the kinkier imagery she became famous for. An Old Hollywood-inspired session might be softer and more luxurious, with beautiful lingerie, dramatic lighting, and plenty of movie-star glamour. But you can also mix things up.
Maybe you love vintage hair and makeup but want more contemporary lingerie, or perhaps you want a modern fashion-inspired look photographed with our style of posing and lighting. Your version of boudoir might involve Halloween, a character, a fantasy, or something wonderfully weird that doesn’t fit neatly into any category. Several of the styles we photograph at Lone Star overlap, and that’s part of the fun! Pin-up, glamour, fashion, and boudoir don’t have to live in completely separate boxes.
You Don’t Have to Take Your Clothes Off
Here’s something that sometimes surprises people: you can create an incredibly sexy portrait while wearing quite a lot of clothing.
A fitted dress can be just as sensual as lingerie, especially when the photograph catches you slipping it from your shoulders or reaching for the zipper. A robe, button-down shirt, bodysuit, corset, or oversized sweater can create an intimate feeling without revealing very much at all. Our sweater sessions are a perfect example. They’re soft, cozy, feminine, and just suggestive enough to let the imagination fill in the blanks.
Of course, if you’ve been dreaming about gorgeous lingerie, stockings and garters, white sheets, or implied nudity, we’re certainly not going to talk you out of it. You decide how much you want to show, and we’ll work within your comfort level while guiding you through the posing from beginning to end.
We do have a few boundaries. We don’t photograph full frontal nudity, sexually explicit imagery, or couples boudoir. Beyond that, there’s quite a bit of room to play. If your idea celebrates the female form and we can turn it into something beautiful, glamorous, fashionable, playful, or deliciously daring, chances are we’re going to have fun with it.
For Yourself or Someone Special?
About half of our boudoir clients come in with someone special in mind. A collection of gorgeous portraits can make an unforgettable anniversary, wedding, birthday, Valentine’s Day, or just-because gift for a partner. And, of course, that partner doesn’t have to be a man. Beautiful photographs make excellent gifts regardless of who’s lucky enough to receive them.
But we have a particular soft spot for the women who book boudoir simply because they want to do it for themselves. You don’t need a romantic partner or special occasion to justify wanting beautiful photographs of yourself. Maybe you’ve always wondered what it would be like. Maybe there’s a particular look you’ve been dying to create. Maybe you want to celebrate where you are right now, or maybe it just sounds like a ridiculously fun way to spend the day.
“I want to do this” is a perfectly good reason.
What Happens During a Boudoir Session?
If you’ve never done anything like this before, don’t worry. Most of our clients aren’t professional models and arrive with absolutely no idea what they’re supposed to do once the camera comes out. You don’t need to know how to pose, where to look, what to do with your hands, or how you’re somehow supposed to look natural while standing around in your underwear with someone pointing a camera at you. That’s our job.
Your experience begins with styling. You’ll have access to our extensive studio wardrobe, shoes, jewelry, and accessories, and together we’ll put together looks that suit the mood you want to create. You’re also welcome to bring your own lingerie, clothing, or personal pieces you’d like to incorporate.
Then it’s time for professional hair and makeup. Depending on your vision, that might mean full vintage glamour, bombshell waves, something soft and romantic, or another look entirely. Once you’re camera-ready, we’ll help with the finishing touches and guide you through your session pose by pose.
And when we say guided posing, we mean it. We’ll help with your hands, feet, posture, expression, where to put your weight, where to look, and what to do with that shoulder that has suddenly become weirdly confusing now that a camera is pointed at you. You don’t have to walk through our doors knowing how to look sexy in photographs. That’s part of what you’re hiring us for.
What Do You Want to Feel Like?
Boudoir photography is often marketed as an empowering, life-changing experience. Maybe it can be, but we’re not going to promise that spending one afternoon in a photography studio will completely transform the way you see yourself forever. What we do hope is that you have an amazing experience while you’re here.
Maybe you want to feel glamorous or sexy. Maybe you’re going for playful, confident, feminine, adventurous, daring, romantic, or something completely different. Whatever it is, we want to create an experience and photographs that let you explore that side of yourself. And you might surprise yourself along the way. There’s something pretty wonderful about arriving nervous or convinced you’re “not photogenic,” then seeing yourself on the screen looking exactly like the woman you hoped we’d capture.
If you leave the studio seeing yourself a little differently than when you walked in, that’s a win. And if you leave with beautiful photographs to remind you that yes, you really did look that fabulous? Even better.
Boudoir, Your Way
If there’s one thing we hope you take away from all of this, it’s that there isn’t one right way to do boudoir. You don’t have to wear a certain thing, show a certain amount of skin, fit a certain body type, or recreate photographs you’ve seen someone else make. Your session can be vintage or modern, soft or edgy, playful or sultry, beautifully simple or completely over the top. It can be a gift for someone you love or something that’s entirely, unapologetically for you.
